Macaulay Culkin gushed about his late co-star John Candy amidst his ongoing estrangement from his father.
Child star Culkin shot onto the Hollywood scene in 1989 in the movie Uncle Buck where he played Miles Russell, the nephew of Candy's character Buck Russell.
Culkin was around the age of eight when the movie was made and he says that Candy, who passed away in 1994 at the age of 43, was a 'paternal' presence for him while filming Uncle Buck.
Speaking in Colin Hank's new documentary John Candy: I Like Me (which comes out on Prime Video next month), the Home Alone alumni reminisced about his time working with the actor.

"He showed a lot of respect," Culkin said of Candy, adding: "When you're eight years old, you don't really get respect, whether it's in a workplace or just from adults and grown-ups in general. You felt invited in."
Culkin went on to speak of Candy's 'paternal' presence and believes that the actor was aware of how difficult Culkin's father, Kit Culkin, was at the time his young son was breaking into the acting world.
Culkin mused, as per Entertainment Weekly: "I think he always had that really great instinct.

"I think he saw. Listen, even before the wave crested and the Home Alone stuff was happening, it was not hard to see how difficult my father was. It was no secret. He was already a monster.
"All of a sudden, the fame and the money came, and he became an infamous monster."
"He was already not a good guy," Culkin went on to say of his dad in the documentary. "I think John was looking a little side-eyed, like, 'Is everything alright over there? You doing good? Good day? Everything's alright? Everything good at home? Alright'."

Culkin further praised Candy for 'looking out for' him on set and said that his kind actions were 'a testament to the kind of man he was'.

Culkin hasn't spoken to his father in almost 30 years; something he insists Kit 'deserves'.
Speaking on Kate and Oliver Hudson’s Sibling Revelry podcast earlier this year, Culkin said of his estrangement from his father and having not spoken to him in three decades: "Oh, he deserves it too. He’s a man who, he had seven kids, and now he has four grandkids. And none of them want anything to do with him."
Culkin shares two young sons with his fianceé Brenda Song while his brother, Succession star Kieran Culkin, has a son and daughter with his wife Jazz Charton.
