An infamous interview with Liam Payne in 2022 led to a strong reaction from the late singer's bandmates in One Direction.
In 2022, Payne took to the Impaulsive podcast with Logan Paul, giving a startlingly candid interview in which he opened up about his struggles behind closed doors, and even spoke strongly about his bandmates.
Just two years later in 2024, Payne died after falling from his balcony at the Casa Sur Hotel in Argentina's capital, Buenos Aires.
A coroner in the UK would go on to give a preliminary cause of death as multiple traumatic injuries in January 2025, with the inquest adjourned for a further hearing at Beaconsfield Coroner’s Court on 6 November 2025.

Following Payne's death five people were arrested, though Argentinian authorities have gone on to drop manslaughter charges against one of Payne's friends as well as two members of staff at the hotel.
His interview with Paul caused a strong reaction from Payne's bandmates.

Fellow One Direction alumnus Louis Tomlinson hit out at Paul following the podcast, vowing that he would 'f**king forever despise' Paul for the way that the interview was handled.

In the interview Payne could be seen sipping at a whisky as he got into shocking detail about his own struggles.
After the episode aired, he took to social media to help address the fallout after being criticized for his 'insensitive' comments.
"Guys - I wouldn’t normally comment on this stuff but when its your family it’s hard to let it slide," he said.
"They mentioned a specific incident involving Zayn which I responded to - but listening back maybe I didn’t articulate myself as well as I could have."

He added: "I was saying that there will always be things we disagree on but that I will always, always be on his side. That’s family. Zayn is my brother and I will stand by him forever."
Payne's shocking and sudden death sparked an outpouring of grief.

The precise details around Payne's death, aside from a provisional cause of death, have yet to be determined.

Senior Coroner Crispin Butler anticipated that Payne's dying overseas will make the inquest process of determining the circumstances around his death more difficult as he does not the same powers to assemble evidence as he would in the UK.
He told the court: "Whilst there are ongoing investigations in Argentina into the circumstances of Liam's death, over which I have no legal jurisdiction, it is anticipated that procuring the relevant information to address particularly how Liam came by his death may take some time through the formal channel of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office."
A pre-inquest review, a hearing in complex cases like this where the coroner's court prepares legally for the inquest to begin properly, will be held on 6 November.
