People shocked at 'insane' way Isla Fisher announced her divorce from Sacha Baron Cohen after 13 years

After two decades together, the pair went their separate ways in April 2023

Isla Fisher stunned fans in the way she revealed she'd separated from her husband, Sacha Baron Cohen, after 20 years together.

The 49-year-old Scooby-Doo star first met the English actor famous for bringing the character Borat to life at a party in Sydney, Australia, in 2001.

By 2004, Fisher and Baron Cohen revealed they were engaged, but it wouldn't be until 2010 until they finally exchanged vows.

Over the years, the couple went on to welcome three children, born in 2007, 2010 and 2015.

Yet, news broke that the pair had officially filed for divorce after more than two decades of their relationship and 13 years of marriage in April last year, which came to a full close as of June this year.

In statements posted to Instagram at the time, the pair revealed that they had jointly agreed to divorce back in 2023.

"After a long tennis match lasting over twenty years, we are finally putting our racquets down. In 2023 we jointly filed to end our marriage," the statement read.

"We have always prioritized our privacy, and have been quietly working through this change.

"We forever share in our devotion and love for our children. We sincerely appreciate your respecting our family’s wish for privacy."

The revelation shocked fans to the core, not least of all because it emerged out of the blue, but because of the couple's bizarre choice of words - specifically, the tennis match reference.

To hammer home the point further, the statement was accompanied with a selfie of the pair quite literally donning tennis gear.

On X, formerly Twitter, the announcement baffled fans.

"This is an insane way to announce your divorce," penned one. "I just can’t believe this is the way she chose to do it."

"Not even a post but in stories is insane," another chimed, while a third simply wrote: "I’m speechless."

However, considering how Fisher likes to stress keeping her family life private, perhaps it shouldn't have come as such a shock that they only publicly addressed the divorce a year later.

"I get nervous talking about it because I feel like, by not having my relationship in the public domain and not having spoken about how we met or really talked about our marriage publicly, it's remained something private and valuable to me," the Wedding Crashers star told The Australian Women's Weekly.

"But having a shared ability to find humor in the sharpness of life is always going to bring connection. And, otherwise, I just think it's nice to keep some things for yourself."
