It's basically all anyone can talk about whenever Miley Cyrus releases a new song: is it about Liam Hemsworth?

The famous couple have certainly had their ups and downs over the years, but while the relationship looks to be well and truly behind them now, fans can't help but wonder whether Cyrus is still using it as inspiration for her music.

One of the most obvious examples that springs to mind is her recent hit 'Flowers', which fans were convinced was about Hemsworth after spotting its similarities to the Bruno Mars song 'When I was Your Man'.

The actor is believed to have once dedicated the Bruno Mars song to Cyrus before their split in August 2019, and the fact that 'Flowers' came out on Hemsworth's birthday only added fuel to the fire.

The speculation continues with each new single, but Cyrus has now had her say on whether she really uses her old relationship for inspiration.

Speaking to British Vogue, Cyrus said: "I never need to be a master at the craft of tricking an audience. It will set itself on fire all by itself.”

Referring specifically to 'Flowers', Cyrus explained that rather than using the song as a way to document her experiences, she instead just wrote something that she wanted to hear.

Cyrus explained: "I wrote it in a really different way. The chorus was originally: ‘I can buy myself flowers, write my name in the sand, but I can’t love me better than you can'.

"It used to be more, like, 1950s. The saddest song. Like: ‘Sure, I can be my own lover, but you’re so much better'."

The song changed throughout the writing process into the ones fans love so much today, with Cyrus adding now: "The song is a little fake it till you make it. Which I’m a big fan of.”

That being said, Cyrus said that when it comes to her relationship with Hemsworth, “I wouldn’t erase my story or want it to be erased.

“Having an interesting life makes for interesting storytelling," she said.

The singer, 30, is now in a relationship with Liily drummer Maxx Morando after meeting on an almost-blind date.

"Well, it was blind for me and not really for him," she explained.

"I thought, ‘The worst that can happen is I leave'," but the pair have since been going strong for more than a year.

Cyrus is also two years sober, and prefers spending time 'literally walking through rose gardens or going to a museum' than in a club.

"It’s not about being self-serious. I’m just evolved," she said.
