Couple who bought a Tesla each and drove around 500 miles per week left shocked after comparing their electricity bill

The husband and wife decided to ditch their gas cars in favor of two electric vehicles

There are many reasons to buy an electric car, and the money-saving aspect is one in particular that people are raving about.

According to the American Automobile Association, the average American driver spends about $3,000 per year on gas, while, as I'm sure you already know, running an EV is substantially cheaper.

In fact, it's said that EV drivers tend to spend about 60 percent less each year on fuel costs compared to drivers of gas-powered cars, as per a 2020 Consumer Reports study.

With this in mind, it's no surprise that there's thought to be over 2.5 million EVs on America's roads.

Jumping on the EV bandwagon two years ago was YouTuber Mac's Tech Toy Box and his wife.

The couple ditched their gas cars and purchased two Teslas within a few months of each other.

Before owning the two Model Ys, Mac said their monthly electricity bills were roughly $225.

After they purchased one of the popular Tesla cars, they monitored their bills further and, while they were using their new EV five to six times a week and traveling as far as 500 miles, they discovered that their electricity bill had actually gone down to just $214.

Mac did note that this figure was between February - June during the cooler months, so he wouldn't have been relying heavily on the air conditioning in the car, something which is notorious for draining a car's battery.

Then, after purchasing another Telsa, they found their bills went up to $276, just over 50 bucks more their than original bill.

Going on to give further context, Mac said that when he had a Mustang he was filling up on gas around once a week and spending $40 (before gas prices drastically increased because of inflation), making it to be $160 a month.

Say his wife had the same car and was doing the same thing, it would add up to $320 a month between them.

A key part to them saving so much cash is by charging their EVs at home as public superchargers often have fees.

As per SolarReviews, it can cost anything between $7.84 to $42.75 to charge a Tesla Model Y Performance by using a supercharger.

'Superchargers have rates between $0.11 and $0.60 and vary with location', the website adds.

Other Tesla owners have shared breakdowns of their costs too, with one fellow YouTuber doing the math and working out that it's just $375 to charge their particular Tesla over a 12 month period - which came to $0.023 per mile.

Impressive!
