Venice is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the planet and as a result, an awful lot of people visit every single year.

Unfortunately not all of them make the best decisions, as a viral video posted to TikTok shows.

In footage posted by the user @ienaridens69, a group of tourists can be seen in the drink after they capsized their gondola in Venice. Apparently they refused to stop taking selfies and ignored warnings about standing in the boat.

The gondola was passing under a bridge near St. Mark’s Square when in flipped over, subsequently dumping terrified tourists into the water.

Reports from the local press claim the tourists, a group from China, had been moving around the gondola and talking snaps against the backdrop of some of the city's famous sites when the incident happened.

The complicated manoeuvre under the bridge required the maximum balance of weight onboard, something that was not possible as the tourists repeatedly ignored instructions to sit down and to stop taking selfies.

In videos posted to social media, the tourists could be seen holding onto the boat for dear life as it toppled over, with one shouting 'Oh my god' as they tried to pull themselves to safety.

Thankfully, no one was hurt by the boat topping over, with a post by the Instagram page of Venezia Non è Disneyland (Venice Is Not Disneyland) saying the group were brought to safety and provided with 'hospitality and warmth' in the La Fenice theatre.

It is not the first time tourists have got into a spot of bother while exploring Venice, as two visitors last year decided to surf the famous Grand Canal using an electric surfboard.

They were caught on camera riding up and down the waterways last August, and one even fell off his electric board into the water as they passed under the Accademia Bridge.

No injuries were reported from the incident.

Other footage recorded by various locals show the two tourists dodging a water bus and a taxi under the Rialto Bridge.

The tourists were even cheeky enough to zip past the Salute basilica, one of the city's most iconic sites.

The Mayor of Venice Luigi Brugnaro was understandably disgusted with the tourists' antics.

Taking to X, Brugnaro wrote: "Here are two overbearing idiots who make a mockery of the city.

"I ask everyone to help us identify them to punish them even if our weapons are really blunt.

"We urgently need more powers to the Mayors in terms of public safety!"
