How the proposed $8 billion undersea tunnel could link US and Russia with Elon Musk's help

The tunnel could be built in just eight years, according to a Russian envoy

Here's how the proposed $8 billion undersea tunnel could link the US and Russia and it could be completed with the help of Elon Musk.

While the US currently has a ton of sanctions imposed on Russia right now amid the ongoing war in Ukraine, President Donald Trump has had recent dialogue with Vladimir Putin in the hope of brining an end to the fighting.

It may remain unclear what Putin's current intentions are, though a Kremlin envoy has seemingly suggested Russia wants closer relations with the US in the form of a 'Putin-Trump' rail tunnel linking eastern Russia and the US state.

Kremlin investment envoy Kirill Dmitriev has said the 70-mile link between Siberia and Alaska would 'unlock joint resource exploration', and has even suggested Tesla founder Musk could build it.

Dmitriev, who has been a prominent figure in the Ukraine peace talks, has claimed the ambitious project could be completed by Musk's Boring Company at a cost of $8 billion, and could be completed in as little as eight years.

"Elon Musk, imagine connecting the US and Russia, the Americas and Afro-Eurasia, with the Putin-Trump Tunnel - a 70-mile link symbolising unity," the envoy wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, last week.

"Traditional costs are [over] $65bn, but the Boring Company's tech could reduce it to [under] $8bn. Let's build a future together!"

Dmitriev added: "This mega-project will connect continents and make the Boring Company the most exciting infrastructure innovator ever!"

Trump or Putin have not publicly commented on the plans.

It comes after a report by the Financial Times suggested that things turned sour between Trump and Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the latter's visit to the White House last week.

Trump reportedly called on Ukraine to accept Putin’s ‘maximalist’ peace demands, which included Putin’s demand that Zelenskyy surrender the entire Donbas region.

This is something Zelenskyy has rejected, and according to the report, Trump tossed maps aside and the pair shouted expletives in their heated moments.

Trump also insisted that 'Putin will destroy you' if he doesn’t concede to these terms, while Zelenskyy argued back that 'Putin doesn’t want peace, that’s why we need pressure on him'.

The Ukrainian leader had visited the Oval Office in the hope of the US would supply Tomahawk cruise missiles, weapons that are significantly more powerful than Ukraine currently has in its arsenal.

However, the Republican president reportedly confirmed in the meeting on Friday that the US would not be supplying these weapons.
