True size of Tokyo has left the internet shocked as 'city that never ends' is revealed from above

Both the photos and statistics are mind-boggling

There's nothing like a bit of perspective to put our world into, well... perspective.

First, this astonishing photo exposing the real distance between the Earth and Moon went viral, blowing our minds and making us feel even more existential than usual.

Now it’s Japan's turn to leave jaws on the floor, with a stunning photo showing just how huge the largest metropolitan area in the world really is.

The Tokyo metropolitan area - known as Greater Tokyo - covers around 13,500 square kilometers, or roughly 5,213 square miles.

It's a similar size to Los Angeles county, but is home to some 37 million people, making it one of the most populated metropolitan areas on our very planet.

For even more comparison, that's nearly the entire population of Canada packed into a single urban area.

The sheer scale, density, and efficiency of this city is something that truly has to be seen to be believed.

An aerial photo shared to Reddit shows the stunning scale of the area.

Densely packed with buildings and infrastructure, you can see Mount Fuji's peak, southwest of Tokyo, in the background.

An Instagram account Discover_Our_Planet recently shared the photos to their 123k followers, writing: "Sprawling across over 13,500 square kilometers, Greater Tokyo is the largest metropolitan area in the world - home to nearly 37 million people."

While the photo is breathtaking, there's one thing in particular those who've visited the city can't get over.

When you think of Tokyo, you might think of amazing food, beautiful cherry blossoms and advanced technology.

But it's the city's cleanliness which is particularly memorable.

Having recently spent a week in Tokyo myself, I can confirm first-hand that the streets are incredibly clean.

"Went there in 2016 and we couldn't believe that when standing at the top of the Sky Tree you could look in any direction and not see the city end," one Redditor wrote, adding: "Crazy huge and mind blowingly clean."

"Still can’t believe how clean it is...Everybody should go there once," a second agreed.

"Such immense urban area and population density, yet one of the cleanest, safest, and easiest to get around places I've ever been," a third penned. "Tokyo is an absolute marvel."

Over on Instagram, someone who'd previously called the city home shared their experience.

"I lived in the very center for more than 10 years," they said. "And trust me it is quiet, clean, very narrow little streets, no cars parking on the streets, tiny gardens neatly done, top notch restaurants around the corner, taxis available instantly (well two minutes) - just amazing."

Another person added: "Tokyo has the same population as all of Canada, while you can fit 26.4 Japans in the Canadian landmass. A truly mind boggling statistic."

The more you know!
