US President Donald Trump has come under fire for his lack of 'respect' at Pope Francis' funeral.

On April 21, Pope Francis passed away at the age of 88 years old, confirmed by the Vatican in a statement from Camerlengo Cardinal Kevin Farrell.

Farrell announced with 'deep sorrow' the passing of 'our Holy Father Francis' at 7:35 that morning, reflecting he'd 'returned to the home of the father' after an 'entire life dedicated to the service of the Lord and of his Church'.

Today (April 28), the funeral proceedings of the Pope have commenced, with hundreds of thousands flocking to St Peter's Square in Vatican City, including world leaders US President Donald Trump, President of France Emmanuel Macron, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and Prime Minister of the UK Keir Starmer.

Trump arrived alongside wife Melania, joining the likes of Starmer, Zelensky and also Prince William for the proceedings.

He's since been slammed on social media for showing up wearing not black, but a blue suit.

One Twitter user wrote: "Trump the only world leader without the respect to wear black at Pope Francis funeral. He’s a disgrace to America and the world. God bless Pope Francis."

"What is it with Trump that he did not even have the decency to wear a black tie, never mind he wore a blue suit," a second commented.

A third added: "Look at our tone deaf, idiot President Trump wearing blue at Pope Francis funeral. Not a day goes by that this makeup covered moron doesn't embarrass us on the world stage."

And it's not the only reason the leader is being dragged online.

Prior to leaving Washington yesterday, Trump said of Francis: "[He] loved the world, actually, and he was just a good man. I thought he was a fantastic kind of a guy."

However, he then went on to discuss how the funeral would also see him able to 'meet with a lot' of other world leaders.

Trump told MSNBC: "It's going to be very interesting. We're going to meet with a lot of the foreign leaders, they want to meet.

"Trade deals are going very well. I think Russia and Ukraine, I think they are coming along, we hope, very fragile. And Iran I think is going very well. We'll see what happens. We're working on plenty of things."

A Twitter user responded: "My goodness. Please tell me Donald Trump isn’t going to try to work trade deals at Pope Francis’s funeral."

"Disrespectful," another added.

A third commented: "He should be shunned."

UNILAD has contacted the White House for comment.

Historically, Trump and Francis' relationship hasn't always been smooth-sailing.

Director of the Center on Religion and Culture at Fordham University in New York, David Gibson, described the relationship between the pair as 'fraught'.

He told AP News Trump's second time in office was 'even worse with the Vatican' as a result of the President's even more 'aggressive' approach 'against migrants' and 'international aid'.
