A US congressman has been forced to admit he flat-out lied on his resume to land a job in politics.

While some people might embellish things just a tad, g Republican Congress Member-elect George Santos took it to the next level.

Santos confessed in a bombshell interview with the New York Times that he had 'never worked directly' for banking firms Goldman Sachs and Citigroup.

He blamed a 'poor choice of words' for the confusion and added that he is 'not a criminal'.

“My sins here are embellishing my resume. I’m sorry," he told the New York Times.

"This [controversy] will not deter me from having good legislative success.

He added: "I will be effective. I will be good."

As well as lying about his work history, it has since been revealed that he never graduated from college, even though he had previously insisted he received a degree from New York's Baruch College in 2010.

"I didn’t graduate from any institution of higher learning. I’m embarrassed and sorry for having embellished my resume,” he told the publication.

"I own up to that … We do stupid things in life."

Santos has since been compared to serial liar George Costanza of the popular sitcom Seinfeld.

Constanza, played by a Jason Alexander, loved to bend the truth, and now social media are making a few similarities after he claimed he was Jewish,

Spoiler: he isn't.

Santos said, as per amNY:

"I never claimed to be Jewish. I am Catholic. Because I learned my maternal family had a Jewish background I said I was 'Jew-ish'."

Okay then, George.
