We’ve all heard things go bump in the night, but probably not like this.

Ohio State students had the fright of their life when investigating what they thought was ‘paranormal activity’ at their college pad.

After exploring their basement though, they found that the sounds had been caused by a man who’d been living in their home - without anyone realising.

The terrifying discovery was made by students from Ohio State University, who’d been living together in an off-campus home.

Despite 10 people residing in the rented house, the roomies started noticing very strange activity such as drawers being left open, random lights switched on and eerie sounds emanating from the basement.

It happened so often that after a month of living at the Columbus property, the group even began to talk about the 'ghost’ that haunted the hallways.

As the spooky shenanigans continued though, they decided to investigate with the group searching every room in the house.

It was then that they made a shocking discovery in the basement, finding a locked door which no one could open.

Even more concerning, the group could hear noise coming from the other side.

Calling the police for backup, the Ohio State students had the door pried open and it revealed an entire bedroom where a stranger had been secretly living.

Inside the room were a bed, a TV and even photos of the man’s loved ones.

Shockingly, one of the students later realised they’d met him before, after finding him lurking inside the property’s basement.

At the time, Brett Mugglin had spoken with the mysterious man, Jeremy, who even joked about wondering when he’d ‘meet the people that live here’.

Mugglin assume Jeremy was one of his housemates, but no one had heard of him.

It turned out though that Jeremy's cousin had lived in the house the previous year, which is how he gained access through a side entrance to secretly access the basement.

Shortly after the spooky discovery, Jeremy was evicted and the rental company changed the locks.

Understandably though, the students were still creeped out by the incident.

Fellow renter, Mark Hartman, later told ABC News: "It could have potentially been a scary situation… Two of the 10 roommates in our section of the house are girls and our rooms don't have locks on the doors."

We imagine freshers will also be losing sleep after hearing the scary story.
