Mom slammed after asking children’s birthday party guests to bring $5 for yard renovations

The TikTok mom took an unusual approach to the party, having it first thing in the morning as well as making an unusual request

A mom has been criticised online after hosting a children's birthday party with some unusual rules.

Children's birthday parties can often contain drama beneath the surface.

At least that's the impression from a video posted online by one mom after she hosted one for her child.

Mom Rachel Gibbs took to social media to share her rules for the party, and many people were left less than impressed by her approach.

For one thing - people who are not good in the morning may want to look away for this part - she decided to have the party get started at 9.30am.

You might imagine a children's party would be at lunchtime or perhaps early evening.

Her reasoning was that by the time the party was over, you would still have most of your day left afterwards, and it wouldn't interrupt nap time.

She said: "I don't want you at my house all day. I'm giving you your day. I do not expect you to sacrifice your entire Saturday for a child's birthday party who's not even gonna remember it.

"And the time? Please leave my house. My child needs to nap, and anybody who's coming to a 1-year-old's birthday party is already up at 9 30 a.m., or they can suck it up for one day because it's over at 11. You have your entire day."

But it was a request that she put up instead of gifts that got people talking.

She explained that she didn't want gifts, but if people wanted to, they could bring $5 which would be used in refurbishing their backyard.

Gibbs said: "I specifically, very clearly, put on the imitations 'Please, do not bring gifts.'"

She added: "And then I said, 'If you feel inclined to bring something, consider $5, because we're trying to remodel, redo our yard. Our backyard is a train wreck.

"Bring us five bucks to help us redo our backyard. That's what we're asking. But she does not need anything."

While many TikTokers liked the idea of the morning party, the request for donations to the yard instead of gifts went down less well.

One person wrote: “Never host a party and ask for money!!”

Another posted: “I don’t agree with using a birthday for a home project."

But another took a different view, writing: “I’d much rather bring $5 than a random thing you may not want or need!!”
