A federal officer has shot and killed a man in Minneapolis, the Department of Homeland Security has confirmed.
Spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin told the BBC: "The officers attempted to disarm the suspect but the armed suspect violently resisted. Fearing for his life and the lives and safety of fellow officers, an agent fired defensive shots. Medics on scene immediately delivered medical aid to the subject but was pronounced dead at the scene."
The spokesperson went on to say the man had two magazines and no forms of identification when he was shot.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara has since confirmed in a press conference the deceased is a 31-year-old, believed to be an American citizen.

O'Hara went on to say there is currently an 'unlawful assembly' in Minneapolis, who have been asked by authorities to leave the scene.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has also been speaking at a press conference this afternoon, questioning the ICE operation.
"How many more residents, how many more Americans need to die or get badly hurt for this operation to end?" he asked.
The mayor went on to described the Trump administration's immigration crackdown as an 'invasion' and requested the president to 'be a leader', as per the BBC.
"Put Minneapolis, put America first," he added in a direct plea to Trump.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has spoken to the White House following the shooting, and took to social media to voice his concerns over the shocking incident.
In a statement posted on X, Walz said: "I just spoke with the White House after another horrific shooting by federal agents this morning. Minnesota has had it. This is sickening.
"The President must end this operation. Pull the thousands of violent, untrained officers out of Minnesota. Now."

The governor added: "I told the White House the state must lead the investigation.
"Let state investigators secure justice. As we process the scene, stay peaceful and give them space The State has the personnel to keep people safe – federal agents must not obstruct our ability to do so."
It comes after Renee Nicole Goode was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Minneapolis on January 7.
The Trump administration initially declared Good a 'domestic terrorist', though footage of the incident challenged this narrative as it appeared to show Good attempting to drive away from the scene as Ross shot her three times.
Protests have continued to take place in Minneapolis and the rest of the US following Goode's tragic killing.
