Fraternity caught allegedly hazing young student in 'nasty' video prompting school investigation

A video appears to show students at the University of Miami carrying out a 'hazing' in broad daylight, prompting an investigation

A video has emerged which appears to show a group of students taking part in a 'hazing', prompting an investigation.

For those who don't know, 'hazing' is a practice in which someone undergoes some sort of ceremony, often involving disgusting or taboo elements, in order to be accepted into a fraternity or sorority.

In extreme cases the practice has even resulted in students dying.

Hazing is illegal in 44 US states, including Florida where the incident took place, except for six.

The clip was obtained by NBC South Florida, and shows a student crouching by a grey trash can while other students from the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity appear to chug gallons of milk.

Things get significantly worse when the amount of milk they have consumed appears to cause them to begin vomiting onto the student who is in the grey bin.

Someone can be heard to say in the clip 'that's nasty'.

Multiple videos of the incident were filmed, though only has been verified.

An investigation has now been opened into the incident.

A statement from the University of Miami said: “The University of Miami has received multiple reports related to alleged conduct violations by one of our fraternity chapters,” according to a statement provided to the outlet.

“We are aware of videos being circulated but can only confirm the authenticity of one video. A full investigation is underway.”

If it is found that the incident was indeed hazing, then those involved could face graver consequences than just those imposed by the university.

Hazing is illegal in Florida, and according to state law is defined as an act which 'recklessly or intentionally endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student'.

This must be someone who is looking for 'admission into any organization', 'affiliation with any organization', or 'tradition or ritual'.

An investigation has been launched by the college.

Police have said that they are not currently investigating the incident as the University of Miami has not yet responded to their requests and no report has been filed, according to NBC South Florida.

The University of Miami has previously been at the centre of a hazing tragedy in 2005 when student Chad Meredith died while attempting to swim across a lake while intoxicated.

Chad's death sparked a law banning the practice, but the practice came to light at the college again in 2022.

The University of Miami’s Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, which had been open at the college since 1949, was shut down after allegations emerged that members had spiked drinks and participated in chants about violence towards women.

UNILAD has reached out to the University of Miami for comment.
