Officials have given an update on the Maynard family, who went missing after an incident at sea saw their boat capsize.
The Maynard family, from Texas, went missing in August 2024 and many questions were raised about what happened to them.
David and Mary Maynard, along with their two young sons Colton, 11, and Brantley, seven, were aboard a 28-foot boat with four other people while on vacation in Alaska for a wedding.
Unfortunately, the boat began taking in water 16 miles off the Alaskan coastline and the US Coast Guard was notified at around 7.00pm on August 3, before the boat sunk.
The four other individuals that were aboard were able to flee on a life raft, and were later found by the Coast Guard when a search was conducted with the Alaska State Troopers and multiple good Samaritan vessel crews.
The family of four went missing back in August last year while on vacation in Alaska (GoFundMe) But the Maynard family were unable to be located, and the search was called off 24 hours later.
The US Coast Guard issued a statement about calling off the search, which read: “The decision to suspend a search is never easy and involves the careful consideration of many factors including environmental conditions and search operations.
“Our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends, and loved ones of the missing people during this unimaginably difficult time.”
Now, 10 months on, private investigating groups who have been conducting search missions have an update about the likely fate of the family.
The vessel was reportedly found in early May of this year, and divers managed to retrieve three sets of remains from the boat.
While they are yet to be identified, officials have said they believe the remains belong to the Maynard family.
An autopsy will help positively confirm whether the bodies are that of the Maynard family (KCENNews) Medical examiners are working to positively identify the remains, and an autopsy has yet to be undertaken.
A GoFundMe was set up following the family’s disappearance and over $20,000 was raised.
The page was set up by Tanashea Aviles, someone who describes the Maynards as being like 'family' to her, with the bio for the fundraiser reading: “The Maynards are not just friends, they are family to me and a lot of others. By now, a lot of us have heard about the tragic news.
“For those who don’t know, this sweet family of four was lost at sea on their vacation to Alaska. Mary’s parents are still there hoping to bring them home. This family is going through a lot right now. We are asking for prayers and donations if you can, to help with unexpected expenses that the family would have to cover so suddenly.”
