Footage shows the shocking moment that a girl was dragged along by a school bus after her backpack became trapped in the doors.

Ally Rednour, aged six at the time, had been getting off the school bus in Jefferson County Kentucky on May 15 2015 when the doors shut on her backpack.

In a horrifying development, driver Melinda Sanders did not notice that Ally was stuck, and drove off.

Surveillance footage from the horrifying incident shows how Ally was dragged along by the bus.

Initially Ally runs, desperately trying to keep up with the bus until after a few seconds she falls and is pulled along.

The helpless Ally was dragged more than 1,000 feet along the road before Sanders was finally alerted when a car honked its horn at her.

She stops the bus and can be heard saying 'oh my god, oh my god' as she rushes down to Ally.

Doctors said that Ally suffered 'severe abrasions' to 12 percent of her body, and had to have a number of surgeries.

Due to the scarring on her legs Ally no longer wears skirts, and also can't wear jeans due to the rub of the fabric.

She also suffered from PTSD as a result of the ordeal.

Video of the 2015 incident has come to light again after it was published as part of a civil case brought against Sanders by Ally's mom.

Her family claimed that she suffered severe nerve damage and PTSD, and had to undergo several surgeries.

Sanders was fired one month after the episode, with the district saying that she did not follow the correct procedure for children getting on and off the bus.

This includes waiting until a child is at least ten feet away from the bus after disembarking before pulling away, according to school bus driver and trainer Katrina Ferral.

Ferral said: "I think it's horrible. You watch them get off the bus, you close the door.

"When they're away from the bus, close the door, you look in that mirror and you watch them.

"They have to be 10 feet away before you pull off."

In addition to not making sure that Ally was far enough away from the bus before pulling off, Sanders also allegedly broke 16 other rules of the job that day.

These included allegedly running a stop sign and allowing another student to stand while she was driving.

A settlement was reached between Sanders and Ally's family. The exact amount was not made public.

Ally's mom Amy Ehman said: "I don’t want any other kid to ever go through what my child has gone through. I don’t want there to be any other Allys."
