JD Vance is paying tribute to Charlie Kirk in a way no one expected.

Vance and Kirk were close friends prior to the 31-year-old activist's assassination. The vice president and his wife even accompanied Kirk's casket on a flight to Arizona a day after his death.

Heartbreaking photos taken of them arriving in Phoenix and walking off Air Force Two show Kirk's grieving wife Erika holding second lady Usha Vance's hand for support.

Erika has broken her silence following her husband's untimely death. In a livestream conducted from Turning Point USA's office, Erika, 36, spoke of how much Kirk loved her and their two children.

"He loved America, nature, and the Chicago Cubs baseball team," she said.

Erika added: "But most of all, Charlie loved his children. And he loved me. With all his heart. And he made sure I knew that every day."

Elsewhere, Erika vowed to keep her husband's work going by continuing his 'The American Come Back Tour'.

Before his death, Kirk hosted his own podcast called The Charlie Kirk Show where he provided listeners with the 'inside scoop on the biggest news of the day and what's really going on behind the headlines'.

As per the podcast's description, Kirk would give his 'signature no-holds-barred, unapologetically conservative, freedom-loving point of view' on the show.

The last episode that he featured on aired on the day of his death.

Now Vance is set to host an episode of Kirk's podcast as a way of paying tribute to him, which will air at 12.00pm ET today (September 15).

The VP wrote on Twitter yesterday: "Tomorrow, I will have the honor of hosting the Charlie Kirk Show. Please join me as I pay tribute to my friend."

People have since thanked Vance for continuing Kirk's work in the wake of his death.

"Thank you VP @JDVance for continuing to honor Charlie’s legacy," someone said, adding: "Missing Charlie everyday, it’s hard to find words."

"Thank you @JDVance. We appreciate you so much," said a second.

A different person penned: "You've been remarkable this past week. You and your wife have enhanced the office of VP with quite dignity and humanity. This is a fitting tribute."
