Donald Trump has made a dramatic U-turn on his stance regarding the Epstein files after previously being resistant on the idea of the documents being released.

Last week, documents were released by the Oversight Committee as part of its investigation into convicted sex offenders Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell.

From the release, it was revealed that Trump was referenced repeatedly in conversations between Epstein and Maxwell, who is currently serving 20 years in jail for sex trafficking.

While Trump is a former friend of Epstein, he has long maintained he was not aware of his crimes.

The president has long rebuffed calls for the Epstein files to be released, but he's now changed his tune and urged Republicans in Congress to vote for the release of the files, saying 'I don't care'.

Taking to Truth Social, Trump wrote: "House Republicans should vote to release the Epstein files, because we have nothing to hide.

“And it’s time to move on from this Democrat Hoax perpetrated by Radical Left Lunatics in order to deflect from the Great Success of the Republican Party, including our recent Victory on the Democrat ‘Shutdown.'"

His lengthy statement, in part, continued: "The House Oversight Committee can have whatever they are legally entitled to, I DON’T CARE! All I do care about is that Republicans get BACK ON POINT, which is the Economy, 'Affordability'.

"Nobody cared about Jeffrey Epstein when he was alive and, if the Democrats had anything, they would have released it before our Landslide Election Victory. Some 'members' of the Republican Party are being 'used', and we can’t let that happen."

Epstein was found dead in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan, New York City in August 2019. The financier had been arrested earlier that year and died aged 66 while awaiting trial for charges related to sex trafficking.

In the emails released last week, one message between Epstein and author Michael Wolff had the financier claim that Trump ‘knew about the girls’.

Epstein wrote: "[Victim name - redacted] mara lago. [redacted]. trump said he asked me to resign, never a member ever. . of course he knew about the girls as he asked ghislaine to stop."

Trump has repeatedly denied knowing about the sex trafficking that Epstein was conducting and insisted that the pair had a falling out years before he was arrested and charged.

Following the contents of the emails being leaked and Trump being named, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement provided to UNILAD: "The Democrats selectively leaked emails to the liberal media to create a fake narrative to smear President Trump.

"These stories are nothing more than bad-faith efforts to distract from President Trump’s historic accomplishments, and any American with common sense sees right through this hoax and clear distraction from the government opening back up again."
