China has hit back at the US with additional tariffs after Donald Trump announced a slew of new charges on what he described as 'Liberation Day' in the US.

China was one of dozens of countries to be hit with new tariffs when Trump shared his plans on April 2, as he continues his mission to boost his country's economy.

Sharing his plans in a speech from the White House's Rose Garden, the POTUS said: "This is Liberation Day. We've been waiting for a long time, April 2, 2025, will forever be remembered as the day American industry was reborn, the day America's destiny was reclaimed, and the day that we began to 'Make America Wealthy Again'.

"For decades our country has been looted, pillaged, raped and plundered from nations, near and far, from both friend and foe alike."

A number of places around the world were hit with a so-called 'baseline' tariff of 10 percent on all imports to the US, however the president also announced what they described as reciprocal tariffs on dozens of so-called 'worst offenders', which are set to go into effect on 9 April.

"They do it to us, and we do it to them. Doesn't get much simpler than that," Trump said.

China was among the countries hit the hardest by Trump's new measures as he announced tariffs of a staggering 54 percent against the country, including earlier duties already in place.

Now, the country has shared its plans for retaliation.

Starting from April 10, China will add a 34 percent tariff on US goods.

The announcement came as the country's finance ministry says the US tariffs on Chinese products are 'not in line with international trade rules'.

According to BBC News, a spokesperson at the ministry of commerce revealed China has also filed a lawsuit with the World Trade Organization (WTO) amid claims that Trump's tariffs 'seriously violates WTO rules'.

The spokesperson alleged the tariff also 'damages the legitimate rights and interests of WTO members, and undermines the rules-based multilateral trading system and the international economic and trade order'

"It is a typical unilateral bullying practice that endangers the stability of the global economic and trade order. China firmly opposes this," they said.

In addition to the tariffs, Beijing’s commerce ministry also said it would impose more export controls on rare earths, which are materials that can be used in high-tech products such as computer chips and electric vehicle batteries.
