A woman has shared a safety measure that she always takes when driving across bridges.

The clip comes following the devastating collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore.

The bridge collapsed after a container ship called the Dali lost power and crashed into one of the bridge's main support columns.

Crew on board the Dali were able to send a distress signal and enable police to block traffic from accessing the bridge, as well as being able to escape the disaster unharmed.

Unfortunately, a crew of workers had been working on the bridge at the time of the collapse, with six construction workers missing and presumed dead.

Two bodies have now been recovered from the river.

While most traffic was fortunately blocked from accessing the bridge, TikToker Lauryn Jeter has since shared a safety measure she always takes when driving across a bridge.

In a video posted on TikTok, which has gone viral, she advised motorists on one thing that they may want to do to keep themselves safe.

Lauryn, who has the username @jeterky, revealed that she always winds down the windows when driving across bridges.

She said: “I’m not the only one who, as a child, was told you have to roll down all the windows in your car every time you drove across a bridge. I know I’m not the only one.”

Lauryn explained that family members had introduced her to the idea when she was a child.

She added: “Every time we drove across the bridge, they’d be like ‘roll down the windows in case the bridge collapses, you need to swim out of the windows of the car to safety.'"

If a car's windows are closed, the water pressure outside can make it difficult to open them or the doors.

While at the time she thought the suggestion sounded absurd, seeing the bridge collapse 'like Legos' has made her feel very different about it.

After hearing Lauryn's advice, people have said they'll start using the technique in future as a safety precaution.

One wrote: "Never heard that but will def do," as another replied: "I will do this forever now, thank you for the tip!"

A third commented: "I’ve never heard this but I’m doing it moving forward."

Baltimore is one of the busiest ports in the US and is a focal point for the automotive industry.

The bridge's collapse has shut down the port until the debris can be cleared.

Concerns have already been voiced about the ripple effect the port closure could have combined with ongoing disruption in major shipping routes in the Red Sea and the Panama Canal.
