When two planes struck the World Trade Center in New York on September 11 2001, the world changed forever.
The attacks killed nearly 3,000 people - with victims still being identified as recent as last year - and sparked the war on terror across the Middle East, Central and South Asia.
Hijackers took control of four planes, with two of them being crashed into the World Trade Center, one into the Pentagon, and the fourth, Flight 93, failing after passengers revolted onboard.

Now, a harrowing video shows how passengers on another flight reacted when they heard the news of the attacks:
In an announcement over the plane's intercom, a member of staff calmly informs the horrified passengers of the full scale of the attacks from an outside source.
You might expect people to shout out, or scream, or start crying upon hearing the news.

Instead, the video shows something quite different.
As for the passengers themselves, there is a chilling calm over the cabin as they appear to be simply dumbstruck as the announcement continues - with there only being a few murmurs of shock and disbelief at the sheer enormity of the situation they are being presented with.
Some can be seen with their hands on their faces in shock, while one woman appeared to be in tears while speaking to someone on the phone.

In the wake of the attacks, the entirety of US airspace was grounded for civilian flights, departed or otherwise, with every flight on the ground within the space of just a few hours.
This meant landing around 5,000 aircraft in around two hours.
But the damage had been done, and the results of the attacks are still felt around the world to this day.
The attacks were carried out by Al-Qaeda, a jihadist terrorist organisation founded and led by Osama bin Laden.

Al-Qaeda carried out the 9/11 attacks as part of a strategy to challenge US foreign policy.
In the immediate aftermath of the September 11 attacks, the US and its allies began the war in Afghanistan, which would ultimately continue until 2021.
Two years later in 2003, the Iraq War began as the US and its allies invaded.
The estimated toll of the war is that more than 940,000 have died due to direct military action in the wars after 9/11, and between 3.6 and 3.8 million people died as an 'indirect result' of the wars.
