A terror probe has been launched after knife attack on a train in the UK leaves nine fighting for their lives.

Counter-terrorism cops in the UK have joined an investigation following a mass stabbing on a train as it departed Peterborough station having to make an unscheduled stop at Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, on Saturday (November 1).

What happened?

Police reportedly were called to the incident at 7.39pm where 10 victims were raced to hospital with stab wounds as cops took down the alleged knifeman with a Taser.

Nine of the victims are believed to have suffered life-threatening injuries, with one having reported serious but none-critical wounds.

Has anyone been arrested?

The force also confirmed two people have been arrested in connection with the bloody rampage and has since declared a 'major incident.'

Police initially declared Code Plato following the stabbing, a national code word used by British emergency services when responding to a 'marauding terror attack,' reports Daily Mail.

However, it was later rescinded, BTP confirmed to the outlet.

Armed police, paramedics, air ambulances and transport police descended on the London North Eastern Railway (LNER) service, headed to London's King Cross from Doncaster.

Witness accounts

Witnesses said the attack unfolded around nine minutes after the train left Peterborough, with passengers triggering the emergency alarm and some taking cover in the toilets.

Others claimed they were trampled on by fleeing passengers as they saw someone carrying a 'big knife' through the carriage.

One passenger called Gavin told Sky News how he heard people racing across the train during the attack, while overhearing someone say: "They've got a knife. I have been stabbed."

"They were making their way through to get away from the suspect," he continued. "They were extremely bloodied.

"That person, when we pulled in, they were basically on the floor; we couldn't progress further down the train because that person ended up collapsing."

By-standers further claimed police 'tasered a man waving a large knife' on the platform before arresting the alleged suspect.

Gavin said they were then 'ushered out of the station from the platform' with 'multiple' apparent victims.

"The armed police were pointing to the suspect as we came off the train."

Are there any details on the suspects?

While counter-terrorism officials have been drafted in, police are calling for calm as an investigation is underway, stating it would 'not be appropriate to speculate on the causes of the incident' at this time.

What have officials said?

Chief Superintendent Chris Casey said: "This is a shocking incident and first and foremost my thoughts are with those who have been injured this evening and their families.

"We're conducting urgent enquiries to establish what has happened, and it could take some time before we are in a position to confirm anything further.

"At this early stage it would not be appropriate to speculate on the causes of the incident.

"Our response is ongoing at the station and will be for some time.

"Cordons are in place and trains are not currently running through the area, and there are also some road closures.

"I thank the public for their patience and their cooperation this evening which has already greatly assisted our policing response. We will update you again as soon as we have more information."

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also said the 'appalling incident' was 'deeply concerning'.

"My thoughts are with all those affected, and my thanks go to the emergency services for their response," he said in a statement on X, formerly Twitter.
