Travelers issued warning over 'airport theory' TikTok trend that is making people miss flights

The trend might feel brilliant if you succeed and awful if you fail

A new TikTok 'airport theory' trend could prove to be a lot more stress and worry than it's worth, as some people have come close to missing their flights.

When it comes to traveling and going through the airport, it can prove to be a stressful experience at the best of times.

But this one new trend on TikTok known as 'airport theory' has been challenging people to find out if they can’t eliminate a whole bunch of that stress before they sit down for their flight.

The only problem is, doing the challenge can see you actually missing your flight, and for a pretty obvious reason.

An expert has also warned that trying out the hack will likely prove 'a costly mistake'.

So how does airport theory work?

Well, the trend challenges travelers to get from the airport’s entrance to the departure gate in 15 minutes or less...

Yup, you have 15 minutes to go from your car or taxi to basically boarding the plane.

Now this is a pretty high risk challenge, because on the upside, less time spent in the airport can be great, on the downside, airport stress levels can skyrocket.

Some TikTokers like @momlifewithtiff and @jenny_kurtzz have admitted to trying it and advising against it due to almost/actually missing their flights.

Travel expert at the Going travel app Katy Nastro advised against hopping on this latest social media trend.

Nastro argued that this trend is born from the desire to spend fewer hours just hanging about in airports and essentially hoping for the best when it comes to airport business and security checks.

She said: “There are a lot of great tips to come from social media, however, ‘airport theory,’ is one hack you can happily skip over.

“This concept is born from most people's desire to spend as little time in the airport as possible before their flight departs.

"And look, we get it. Airports these days can be crowded and feel like they can cost you an arm and a leg each time you step inside one.”

But she added: “Some airports require a healthy 15-to-20-minute walk or tram ride just to get to the correct terminal area.”

While some airlines may be able to get you on the next outgoing flight if you are lucky, if you try this trend and miss your flight, you might not be so fortunate.

Nastro concluded by saying failing this challenge could be a lot more stress than it's ultimately worth.

She said: “This could be a very costly mistake as you then may be faced with paying for a new, same-day ticket altogether, which is likely not cheap.”
