WWE wrestler JD McDonagh has spoken out after being injured as a result of a move going 'nastily' wrong.

Yesterday (January 28), wrestler The Irish Ace - real name JD McDonagh - and Dominik Mysterio - full name Dominik Óscar Gutiérrez - stepped into the ring for the WWE Raw's World Tag Championship at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta.

Footage has emerged online of the moment McDonagh flung himself off the boxing ropes, performing a 'moonsault' - a.k.a. moonsault press or back flip splash' - which saw him backflip down to the ground.

The wrestler landed the move just behind his opponent but then fell back and hit the commentators table, with the clip showing his head snapping back and him collapsing forward, remaining curled up on the ground for a moment.

Commentator Michael Cole said on-air: "Somebody's got to McDonagh after that. McDonagh's lucky he doesn't have a damn broken neck."

And as one Twitter user wrote: "That looked nasty."

However, it's reported by NDTV Sports that McDonagh popped back up and completed the fight, although he later sort medical help, taking to Twitter later that day to address the incident and update fans. Warning: Graphic footage some may find upsetting.

He wrote: "First off, thanks to everyone for the messages and the concern. I'm good.

"I've got a couple of broken ribs and a punctured lung, so I'm going to be out for a couple months. All things considered, it could have been a lot worse, so I'm grateful for that. See ya in a bit."

Given the diagnosis, it's fair to assume the star ended up taking a quick trip to hospital for a check-up and some care despite carrying on with the match directly after the move went so wrong.

And it's not taken long for fans to rush to the post to offer their well wishes.

One social media user said: "Glad you aren’t paralyzed man. Noggin okay?"

"Broken ribs and a punctured lung sounds rough, but it’s great to know you’re staying positive. Rest up! Wishing you a speedy recovery! Glad it wasn’t worse, and we’ll be ready for your return. Take care!" another added.

A third commented: "Broken ribs and punctured lungs that has to be painful. Get well soon JD."

And a fourth resolved: "That performance showed that warrior spirit JD. Heal up and we’ll see you soon."
