A man’s birthday card from his 98-year-old grandma has moved the internet to tears, with people saying it’s a hugely ‘bittersweet’ message.
The man, named Elliott, took to Reddit to share a photo of the handmade card, which his grandmother had typed up on the computer. However, in the birthday message, she explained that it was likely to be her last, as she had started to struggle both physically and mentally.
"My 98 year old grandma has been making me birthday cards for years. This one is the most plain of them all, but meant the most," he wrote.

The emotional message read: “Happy birthday Elliott. You have blessed my life for 47 years. This will be my last time trying to write on computer and doing it as hands don’t want to write and now memory going fast, but trying to do a birthday card for you my dear precious Elliott. Love you so much, Grandma Rose.”
The image was shared in the MadeMeSmile sub, but some people said the post was ‘kinda MadeMeCry’. However, many agreed that it fits within both areas, as it’s ‘definitely bittersweet’.
In the comments, Elliott explained how ultimately it had made him smile, explaining how he’d lost his grandfather this year and worried that his grandma may not have much longer.
He wrote: “Thank you so much. I’ve always been her ‘Elly-rat’ (play on Elliott). She lost her husband, my 97 year old grandpa this year. Makes me realize, especially with this card, that I will be losing her too. Both were rocks in my life.”

Elliott said he wasn’t able to edit his original post, but that if he could, he would thank everyone for their ‘heartfelt kindness’. He added: “Reading all of these comments have made my birthday (today) so very special.”
Many people commented to say how much the post had touched them, with one saying: “I'm not crying, you're crying!”
Someone else said: “This sub might as well be the 50/50 sub for me in terms of am I actually about to smile...or am I probably about to bittersweet cry and ruin my day for a while.”

A third said they keep every birthday and Christmas card they receive, which some people ‘find weird’. “But trust me, when they've gone, there's nothing like it to reminisce about the times you had with them, the love you had for each other,” they wrote.
“Never ever throw any of the cards away. They're just the sweetest things. Please please give your grandma the biggest hug ever the next time you see her. Really make her understand how much this card meant to you, how it made you cry. She'll really love that. And sometimes, family members just need to hug, one of those really long hugs where you don't want to let go. We all need a hug like that every so often," they added.
