James McCaffrey, who was best known for voicing the video game character Max Payne, has died at the age of 65.

Payne's death came after he had been diagnosed with a type of a type of bone marrow cancer known as multiple myeloma.

In a statement to TMZ, a representative for the actor said: "One of Dick Wolf's proteges (Swift Justice), McCaffrey went on to a successful 35 year career in television and film.

"Trained at the Actor's Studio, he never lost his love for creating characters; however, his good looks often pushed him toward leading man roles."

McCaffrey passed away on Sunday (December 17), while surrounded by friends and family.

News of his death was shared on Instagram by actor Kevin Dillon, who shared a picture of himself and McCaffrey together.

"RIP James McCaffrey," Dillon wrote. "We were lucky to have known you. my best friend you will be missed."

Many fans of McCaffrey have also paid tribute, with one X user writing: "Rest in peace to James McCaffrey. Your incredible performances will always be the best part of these games and the unforgettable characters you played. May you live on forever in these stories."

Another posted: "Rest in peace James McCaffrey, the legendary voice actor behind Max Payne, Alex Casey and more. Absolutely heart broken by this news."

James McCaffrey had roles on TV and films as well as in games.

Other tributes have described McCaffrey as an 'icon', with one saddened fan writing: "I grew up playing Max Payne and its neo noire cop drama story telling was right up my alley.

"To hear of James McCaffrey’s is passing heart breaking. This man WAS Max Payne and gave 100% to the character. Maybe I’ll stream the OG game tonight in his honor."

As well as voicing Max Payne, McCaffrey appeared in a number of television shows including Law & Order: SVU, Suits, Blue Bloods and Bluff City Law.

The actor also had a longstanding role on the show Rescue Me, where he appeared as Jimmy Keefe for 56 episodes between 2004 and 2011.

On the big screen, Keefe starred in titles including The Truth About Cats & Dogs, The Big Take, A Gifted Man, American Splendor and She Hate Me.

The type of cancer McCaffrey died from is known as multiple myeloma because the cancer often affects several areas of the body, such as the spine, skull, pelvis and ribs.

The actor is survived by his wife Rochelle Bostrom, as well as his daughter, Tiernan.
