These are the surprising first 10 songs that hit a billion streams on Spotify

A total of 777 songs have hit a billion streams on Spotify to date

While a certain generation may come from a time where CDs were the big thing, times have changed and now Spotify is the place the vast majority music lovers go to listen to their favorite tunes.

The streaming platform has a whopping 626 million monthly active users, with over 100 million tracks on the app, so it's safe to say it's a big deal.

A massive 777 songs have hit a billion streams on Spotify, with the likes of 'BIRDS OF A FEATHER' by Billie Eilish and 'The One That Got Away' by Katy Perry joining the club recently.

But the first ten songs to hit the billions hits club are rather surprising, so let's take you through them all.

Ed Sheeran - Shape of You

Released in 2017, 'Shape of You' by Ed Sheeran is regarded by fans as one of the best by the British musician.

The song tells the story of a romantic spark building between Sheeran and a woman at the bar.

Drake - One Dance

'One Dance' by Drake released a year prior in 2016, headlining the Views album by the Canadian rapper.

The single released number one in an impressive 15 countries, including the US, Canada and the UK.

The Chainsmokers - Closer

The classic hip-hop track graced our ears back in 2017, and broke several records after its release.

First of all, 'Closer' was the number one single in the US for 12 consecutive weeks, while also spending a whopping 26 weeks in the top five of the Hot 100.

Major Lazer ft. DJ Snake and MØ - Lean On

'Lean On' by Major Lazer dropped in the charts in 2015, in what was the third studio album for the musical trio.

The track did not make it to number one in the US however, but it did reach fourth spot on the Billboard Hot 100.

Ed Sheeran - Thinking Out Loud

Somehow 'Thinking Out Loud' by Ed Sheeran is ten years old having released in 2014, but it still remains an all-time classic to this day.

The track broke a bunch of records after its release, including being the first song to spent an entire year in the UK top 40 .

Justin Bieber - Sorry

'Sorry' really marked Justin Bieber's return to music with a banger of a pop song that wouldn't seem out of place in the charts today.

The hip-hop hit topped the charts in many countries, including the US, Canada and the UK.

Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee ft Justin Bieber - Despacito

Another Bieber song to hit the billion streams mark on Spotify, with 'Despacito' being the song of summer 2017 for many.

In July of that year, 'Despacito' became the most-streamed song of all time.

Justin Bieber - Love Yourself

Justin Bieber dropped a bunch of great tracks in 2015, including 'Love Yourself'.

The slower paced song was Bieber's third consecutive number-one hit in the US charts.

The Chainsmokers ft Daya - Don't Let Me Down

'Don't Let Me Down' by The Chainsmokers released in 2016, and it quickly became a favorite with pop fans.

The song never got to number one in the US, but it did reach number three.

Mike Posner - I Took A Pill In Ibiza

A real club classic to round off the list, with 2015's 'I Took A Pill In Ibiza' also reaching the billion streams.
