The first trailer for the highly-anticipated Lord of the Rings prequel is here, and it's already blowing people away.

After years of waiting and ever-building excitement, there's now only a couple of weeks to go until Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is finally released on 2 September.

Arriving almost 20 years after the last film in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the series is set to take fans back into Middle Earth to watch a story set thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Patrick McKay said the creators were 'not interested' in doing a show 'about the younger version of the same world you knew'.

"We wanted to go way, way, way back and find a story that could exist on its own two feet," he continued. "This was one that we felt hadn't been told on the level and the scale and with the depth that we felt it deserved."

The show definitely takes what we know about TV to a new level as it earned the title of the most expensive TV show ever made, costing a staggering £382 million to create.

While the trailer gives a glimpse into where that money has gone, the full scale will be revealed at the start of September, when the first two episodes of the series will arrive.

The first instalments will arrive on 1 or 2 September, depending on local time zones, before the rest of the series is released in a weekly format. The finale of the eight-episode first season will arrive on 14 October.

Excitement is palpable among fans who have already shared their thoughts on the series, with viewers describing the visuals as 'stunning', while one person wrote: "Ready for the journey back to middle earth. #TheRingsOfPower."

A description for the series promises to introduce an 'ensemble of characters, both familiar and new', with characters including Galadriel, Elrond, and High King Gil-galad having already been revealed in previous teasers and images.

Filmed in New Zealand, the series is set in an era when great powers were created, and kingdoms not only rose to glory, but also came crashing down.

"From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone," Amazon promises.
