Taika Waititi Admits Thor's Goat Scream Is From Taylor Swift Meme

"A lot of people think it's me screaming. It's not."

Anyone who’s watched Thor: Love and Thunder may have experienced a spot of déjà vu when the giant goats showed up, and that’s because their screams are the same sound that was used in a Taylor Swift meme.

Director Taika Waititi admitted he felt inspired by the viral video in which screaming goats replace the ‘oh’ part of Swift's 2012 song ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’.

Here it is for anyone who needs a reminder:

Although you might be wondering why a pair of screaming goats are in the movie to start with, fans of the Marvel comics will know that they appear in the Thor series as Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder, aiding the God of Thunder by pulling his chariot.

But in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they pull along a large Viking ship – and they also screech like the viral goats circa 2013.

Speaking to Insider, Waititi admitted that ‘they were never meant to be screaming’, adding that ‘a lot of people think it’s me screaming’.

"The goats were always going to be in there because they are in the comics, but we didn't know how they would sound," he continued.

These two have some lungs on them.

"Then someone in post-production found this meme of a Taylor Swift song that has screaming goats in it. I didn't even know that existed."

"A lot of people think it's me screaming. It's not."

The Taylor Swift goat screams came about by chance when one of the creators decided to add it as a placeholder.

"One of the vendors that was making the CG goats, they just added the Taylor Swift song 'I Knew You Were Trouble,' but the fan-made one with the goat sounds, and we just thought it was so funny," Waititi added.

"It was just a shot of how the CG creatures were coming along. It wasn't meant for the film or anything; it was just an update. And the screams were freakin' awesome.”

Plenty of people agreed, with one writing on Twitter: “Dude... the goat remix of Taylor Swift's song is one of the funniest things I'd ever seen in my life. Screaming goats in Thor made me so happy.”

Another quipped: “I knew they were trouble when they walked in.”

Even Domino’s Pizza got in on the action, joking: “Glad to see the goat from the Taylor Swift vine finally glow up with a role in #Thor.”

Thor: Love and Thunder is screening in cinemas now.
