People have been left stunned by the uncanny resemblance between Austin Butler and Elvis Presley ahead of the upcoming biopic on the singer.

The musical drama film, directed by Baz Luhrmann, is set to detail both the King of Rock and Roll's personal and professional life.

Taking on the lead role is Butler, previously known for his role as Tex Watson in Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood.

Fans of Presley have been going wild since the official trailer was released, completely stunned by just how much Butler resembles and accurately embodies Presley.

Watch the trailer below:

While some users disagreed that Butler looked much like Presley, with one criticising the amount of makeup seemingly put on Butler as 'unrealistic,' the majority praised the resemblance and the actor's portrayal of the singer.

One user commented that at two minutes 47 seconds in the trailer, Butler 'absolutely nails Elvis's smile'. "It really looks like him. I'm so excited to see this," they said.

"This looks Terrific!! Austin Butler Very Handsome! Can't Wait! Elvis deserves to get justice from this film. Great Job Baz. Also I want to give the young man who plays young Elvis credit for a great job, well done," another commented.

Fans of the 'Jailhouse Rock' singer also flooded to Twitter in support of the casting decision.

Sharing footage of the actor from the Met Gala, one user noted: "Austin Butler has basically transformed into Elvis. (He’s going to win an Oscar for that role)."

Another commented: "So, I finally showed my beloved gran (who’s been a hardcore fan of #Elvis from the beginning) and this specific part of the trailer has us giddy. This isn’t Austin Butler portraying Elvis, this IS Elvis. I can sense an Oscar nomination coming from a mile away.

"The tone of voice he says it in is pitch perfect. My gran was in awe, it’s frighteningly accurate and I cannot wait to experience this film with her."

Butler stars alongside Tom Hanks, Helen Thomson and Richard Roxburgh in the flick.

The film focuses on Presley's 'complicated relationship' with his talent manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Hanks), with the caption to the trailer reading: "The story delves into the complex dynamic between Presley and Parker spanning over 20 years, from Presley’s rise to fame to his unprecedented stardom, against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape and loss of innocence in America. Central to that journey is one of the most significant and influential people in Elvis’s life, Priscilla Presley (Olivia DeJonge)."

Presley's wife, Priscilla, has also praised Butler's performance as the singer.

In a post to Facebook, she said: "Austin Butler, who played Elvis is outstanding. Halfway through the film Jerry and I looked at each other and said WOW!!! Bravo to him…he knew he had big shoes to fill. He was extremely nervous playing this part. I can only imagine."

ELVIS is set to hit cinemas on 24 June 2022.
