Cillian Murphy has asked to 'see a script' to play a Ken in Barbie sequel movie

Cillian Murphy would be on-board for a Barbie sequel, after the success of Greta Gerwig's movie and Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer

Cillian Murphy has all but admitted that he’d be interested in playing a Ken in a sequel to Barbie.

Here's the trailer for Greta Gerwig's smash hit film:

OK, perhaps we’re jumping the gun here a bit, as both Gerwig’s colourful take on the classic Mattel doll’s story and Christopher Nolan's historical epic Oppenheimer - starring Murphy - have only been released for one weekend, but the buzz they’ve both generated has been massive.

Barbie took top spot at the box office, but that was incredibly likely given the mass appeal of the content, as well as the lower age certification meaning that more people could go see it.

That doesn’t mean that Oppenheimer isn’t great too, though.

In fact, this past weekend was the first weekend in history that two films have taken more than $100 million and $50 million at the box office.

That proves that the power of ‘Barbenheimer’ is strong.

Which - of course - means that there’ll probably be a sequel to Barbie.

As great as Oppenheimer might be, it’ll be tough to get another film out of that without going seriously off-piste.

Incidentally, if you’re interested in the precise figures, Barbie raked in $162 million at the US box office this past weekend, whereas Oppenheimer brought in $82.5 million.

Loads of fans even went to see both movies over the weekend, and it would be fantastic to see some of this weirdness reflected in a little joke in any forthcoming Barbie sequel.

Cillian Murphy would be on board, at the very least.

Speaking recently with Cinéfilos, he was asked if he’d play one of the many ‘Kens’ in the film.

“Hey, you know, sure,” he responded.

“Yeah, let’s read the script. Let’s have a conversation.”

He did admit that while he hadn’t seen the movie - starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling - he was really keen to get into a theater and watch it.

“I can’t wait to see the movie,” Murphy added.

“I think it’s great for cinema.

Barbie has been a worldwide phenomenon, taking a whopping $337 million at the box office around the globe, more than doubling its budget in just one weekend.

Oppenheimer brought in $180.4 million worldwide, giving it the highest opening for any biopic, beating even Bohemian Rhapsody.

It’s the biggest opening for a drama since 2019 as well.

The Barbenheimer madness only seems set to continue, with heaps of pre-sale tickets for both movies sold.

With any luck, we’ll get to see Murphy in a pink Oppenheimer-style hat setting off huge glitter bombs in Barbie World before too long.

Both Barbie and Oppenheimer are in cinemas now.
