The Walking Dead star admits brutal death of beloved character was a step too far in the series

Many fans of The Walking Dead are still not over the brutal scene

The Walking Dead fans were devastated to lose a treasured favorite who had been in the show since the first season, but now one of the stars has admitted the death 'went too far.

The popular post-apocalyptic horror TV show aired from 2010 to 2022, concluding after eleven seasons and 177 episodes.

However, many fans of the series will have the death of Glenn, played by Steven Yeun, etched into their memory permanently.

His tragic end came at the start of season 7 of The Walking Dead as villain Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) took his trademark barbwire wrapped bat Lucille and bashed Glenn's head in.

The death wasn't quick and it remains as one of the bloodiest and most brutal death scenes in the zombie apocalypse series, and one that shocked many viewers.

Glenn had been part of a sweet romance with Maggie (Lauren Cohan) so his death was also a blow to fans that had shipped them in previous seasons.

The scene first aired in October 2016 but it's still not one that viewers are over (or ever likely to get over), but an actor from the show has claimed The Walking Dead 'over egged' the death.

Andrew Lincoln, who played main character Rick Grimes, told Empire: "I do still think [Glenn’s death] might have been when we over-egged the omelette.

"Maybe it was lingering too much."

The scene was part of a lengthy night shoot, according to Lincoln, and was also one of the first scenes that Morgan filmed as Negan.

Lincoln described how Morgan had to deliver his epic monologue from season seven during filming, which moved much of the cast and crew to tears.

He explained: "He had to do this extraordinary monologue on his first day at work, and everybody was on their knees and weeping when they weren’t on camera.

"[Morgan] came over and went, ‘Is this normal?’ I went, ‘Yeah, everybody just keeps going.’ It was an extraordinary night."

Lincoln left his role as Rick Grimes in season nine of the show, but then returned in follow-up series The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, which aired earlier this year.

The six-part TV series looked at what eventually happened to some of the characters like Rick Grimes, and fans were delighted to see a happy ending as he was reunited with love interest Michonne (Danai Gurira).
