Titled I Just Killed My Dad, it examines the complex case of a teenager who shot and killed his father in their Louisiana home.

On June 3, 2019, Anthony Templet, 17, fired three shots at his dad Burt Templet's head before calling the police and handing himself in, as per Fox8 Local First.

Anthony was charged with second-degree murder when Burt died several days later.

But what at first glance appears to be a ruthless act of violence unfolds into something much more complicated and sinister.

Anthony told the 911 operator how he and his father had been arguing, which turned into a fist fight, before he ran into his room and grabbed his gun.

I Just Killed My Dad explores the days before and months after the shooting - including Anthony's campaign to get his conviction lessened as some shocking truths emerge.

The series - hailed among 'the best' on Netflix - features interview footage from key witnesses, as well as Anthony himself.

Critics on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes awarded the mini-series a perfect 100 per cent, as Brian Tallerico from RogerEbert noted: "Borgman has a remarkable ability to get a very shy, quiet young man to open up as much as possible."

Joel Keller's Decider, meanwhile, described it as 'the rare true crime docuseries that tells a story that hasn’t been picked apart and retold over decades, and tells the story in a brief, relatively compact manner.'

The discussion continued over on Reddit, where one viewer shared: "Cried buckets after watching the last episode. His cry in the end was the final straw."

A second admitted: "I'm not ashamed to say that I cried as well," as a third wrote: "One of the best true crime [series] on Netflix."

I Just Killed My Dad is available to stream now on Netflix.
