A new Netflix mini-series has sparked a huge online debate.

The three-episode true crime mini-series follows a 2013 drugs bust - but it quickly turns out there is more to the story than anyone thought.

Intriguingly, it opens with the title card: "The facts in this documentary have been meticulously verified. However, It’s possible that some people may not be telling the whole truth."

A Reddit user said they'd watched it immediately after Titan: The OceanGate Submersible Disaster as 'light relief' - and people immediately began debating who is actually telling the truth in the twisty Netflix series

The synopsis given by Netflix for Cocaine Air: Smugglers at 30,000 Ft teases: "2013: four Frenchmen are arrested in Punta Cana with 700 kg of cocaine — none fit the trafficker profile. This documentary asks: who was behind the bust?"

The series in based on a true story about two pilots, Pascal Fauret and Bruno Odos, who were found to have over 1,500lb of cocaine onboard their plane by officials in the Dominican Republic.

The mass amount of drugs were stuffed into 26 suitcases, which Fauret and Odos claimed they knew nothing about.

Ultimately the pair were arrested and sentenced to 20 years behind bars in a Dominican prison.

But the incident, which garnered worldwide coverage at the time, took a dramatic turn in 2015 when Fauret and Odos escaped and returned to France.

They were arrested upon their return and sentenced to six years imprisonment in 2019.

However, just two years later, Odos and Fauret were acquitted of the crimes they'd been charged. Apparently someone came forward and told a judge that the pair had been 'conned' and were simply pawns in a drug trafficking scheme.

While they've been freed, questions still remain about how much Fauret and Odos really knew about the whole thing.

People have taken their thoughts to social media platforms like Reddit to discuss the thought-provoking documentary and if it's worth watching.

"Really enjoyed it," said one person. "One of those stories that gets crazier each episode. Binged all 3. Started out thinking the pilots were naive innocents then ended up not so sure."

A second agreed: "I also really enjoyed it, it was a fun ride. There were some great characters. I felt really bad for the fisherman who got roped into the escape though."

Cocaine Air: Smugglers at 30,000 Ft. is now streaming on Netflix.
