It has been 24 years since the last installment of Lethal Weapon, seeing Mel Gibson and Danny Glover going against a dangerous crime lord. Now, Gibson has confirmed Glover will be in the upcoming Lethal Weapon 5.

Gibson confirmed he would be directing the latest instalment of the popular franchise back in November 2021, with co-star Donny Glover now also on board.

The Lethal Weapon series started in 1987 and follows Martin Riggs (Gibson) and Roger Murtaugh (Glover), two best friends and detectives.

The first four films were directed by the late Richard Donner, who passed away in July 2021.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Gibson explained it was bittersweet taking the reins from his friend.

'Yeah, I am directing that. I’m really looking forward to it. I wish I wasn’t directing it. I wish Richard Donner was still here to do it but left us untimely, and he actually asked me, he said ‘Hey kid, if I don’t make it, you’ll take the reins, huh?’ I told him to shut up. I think it’s an honour for me to be able to carry the flag for him'

With Donner's blessing, he told Glover of the news: 'I called Danny [Glover] up, of course, and said ‘Hey, dude, is it okay with you if I direct this?’, to which Glover replied 'Yeah, let’s go', confirming his involvement in the franchise's fifth instalment.

Not much is known about the plot of the new film, but Gibson said he had complete faith in his co-star adding, 'I know Danny’s going to pull it off real well, too. He’s kind of like the show pony in this one'.

People reacted to the news on Twitter, however some weren't thrilled by the announcement.

In November Seth Meyers posted a sketch of him and a dog, with the caption '#BackInMyDay, Mel Gibson wasn't making a #LethalWeapon5. Back then, Mel Gibson wasn't making anything, because no one wanted their name associated with his brand of sexism and anti-Semitism.” – @SethMeyers'.

The sketch was a reference to Gibson's reported 'exile' from Hollywood, following a DUI arrest that resulted in an anti-Semitic rant.

As reported by Variety, Gibson's career has been 'riddled with accusations of anti-Semitism, homophobia, racism and domestic violence'.

As of yet, there is no release date for Lethal Weapon 5.
