People are flooding to social media in support of Lizzo after she recreated a piece of art on SNL to pay homage to a Black artist.

The singer appeared on Saturday Night Live to perform 'Break Up Twice' on 17 December.

As if people could love Lizzo anymore than they do already, fans have been flocking to social media to praise the 34-year-old for re-creating a piece of artwork during her performance.

The piece of artwork Lizzo recreated in her rendition of 'Break Up Twice' was a self-portrait by master artist Annie Lee (1935-2014).

Lee's artwork is known for recreating scenes from everyday African-American life, her style having been named 'Black Americana', according The Black Art Depot.

Lee rose to fame halfway through her life, only deciding to fully pursue her dreams of being an artist from the age of 40 and throwing her first gallery show at the age of 50.

'Blue Monday' may be a self-portrait of Lee, but the artist didn't paint her face into the picture - wanting to convey how the feeling of waking up on a cold and dreary Monday morning to have to go to work is felt by many.

Fans have since flocked to Twitter to applaud Lizzo's homage to Lee.

One said: "Lizzo is EATING this performance UP!!!! Omg! Came out like the Blue Monday painting by Annie Lee… omg! The artistry! #SNL."

"Lizzo referencing Annie Lee's 'Blue Monday' is such an incredible start to this performance #SNL," another wrote.

A third commented: "Didn't expect that Annie Lee 'Blue Monday' nod. Lizzo always brings such creativity to her performances. #SNL."

A final resolved: "Uniquely Black in America @lizzo is unapologetic about her place in the cultural zeitgeist. This hung in every Black household at the turn of the 21st century. It fully encapsulates our mood today. We are beyond tired. #snl."

Fans applauded the 'artistry' of Lizzo recreating Blue Monday.

The singer uploaded a clip from her performance to Instagram as well as a comparison image of her dressed as the woman in 'Blue Monday' next to the artwork.

She wrote: "You get me, you really get me thank you to my creative team for helping me pull this vision off w less than a week to prepare! @tanishascott @q_thervandross @brettalannelson @iwantalexx @theshelbyswain @erierinailz @kevinbeisler y’all make miracles happen!"

Lizzo also went on to perform Stevie Wonder's 'Someday at Christmas' during her Saturday Night Live appearance.
