Little Mermaid live-action official trailer has been released

The trailer Disney fans have been waiting for has finally arrived

The first full-length trailer for Disney's upcoming Little Mermaid remake has been released and it's delighted fans everywhere.

The trailer for the live-action retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's beloved story was aired during Sunday night's (March 12) Academy Awards.

Halle Bailey, who will play Ariel in the upcoming film, introduced the trailer to the audience at the Dolby theatre.

The film is expected to be a near-exact retelling of the 1989 animated classic, with Bailey starring as Ariel who longs to be a human so she can be with Prince Eric on dry land.

Melissa McCarthy will appear as the treacherous sea witch Ursula, who grants the lovestruck mermaid her wish in exchange for her voice.

The trailer starts with Prince Eric being knocked overboard on a stormy night at sea and shows his chance encounter with the beautiful Ariel as she swims him to shore.

The viewers are then introduced to Ariel's father, King Triton (Javier Bardem) who warns his daughter against interacting with humans.

Songs teased in the trailer include the iconic ballad 'Part Of Your World', in which a wonder-struck Ariel sings of her desire to join the human world.

It's expected that other familiar favourites will be making an appearance in the flick, including 'Under The Sea', 'Kiss The Girl' and 'Poor Unfortunate Souls'.

Fans were delighted with the trailer and took to the comments to share their excitement.

Another commented: "So glad they finally fixed all the lighting and we can see all of Halle's amazing features and the visual effects. Everything released previously was so dark and desaturated."

There was also praise for the casting of Bailey in the role, with one appreciative viewer saying: "As a Black person who grew up with locs, the moment where she flips her locs out of the water has me on the verge of TEARS."

Another commented: "HER VOICE, Ursula's looks, the stunning visuals...!!! I'm in love with this movie already."

This newest outing from Disney is the latest in a line of live-action remakes of previous films.

Other animated classics from Disney that have been recreated for the big screen include Cinderella, The Jungle Book, The Lion King, Aladdin and Mulan.
