Disney has released the first live-action trailer for The Little Mermaid remake which is due to hit cinemas next year.

Starring Halle Bailey in the lead role as adventurous mermaid Ariel, the film is the live-action remake of the 1989 animated classic.

As for the trailer itself, it takes us on a tour of the stunning visuals that will end up in the movie and leaves us with just a snippet of the leading star singing iconic song 'Part of Your World'.

Sadly there had been some controversy over Bailey's casting, though Disney network Freeform hit out at the backlash to her getting the role.

They addressed the 'poor, unfortunate souls' who couldn't handle Ariel being Black, pointing out that there was nothing wrong with Bailey getting the role and suggesting the real problem was people getting mad at a movie because it doesn't look like a cartoon.

Alongside Bailey, the cast includes Javier Bardem as King Triton, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula and Daveed Diggs as the voice of Sebastian the Lobster.

The visuals of the underwater world of The Little Mermaid look incredible.

Sadly there are some members of the cast of the original movie who won't be around to watch the live-action remake and see how their replacements get on.

Pat Carroll, the voice of sea-witch Ursula who steals Ariel's voice as part of her dastardly plot to rule the seas, died last month aged 95.

The voice of Ariel's lobster companion Sebastian, Samuel E. Wright, died last year aged 74 with his iconic performance of Disney song 'Under The Sea' being one of the most memorable parts of the original Little Mermaid.

The Little Mermaid is the latest in a series of live-action remakes for Disney.

Disney has been at the live-action remake game for a few years now, with some movies being straight up remakes and others like Maleficent being closer to reimagining classic films.

The Little Mermaid is just the latest in a long line of live-action remakes that's tacked pretty close to the plots of the original animated movies but refreshed the visuals.

It'll join the ranks of other Disney movies from recent years including Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, Dumbo, Aladdin, The Lion King, Lady and the Tramp, Mulan and Pinocchio.

On top of that, following The Little Mermaid onto the big screen are a whole host of other remakes at various stages in development including Peter Pan, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves and Hercules.

At this rate Disney is going to make live-action versions of pretty much every classic animated movie it has ever put out.

The Little Mermaid is set to release in cinemas on 26 May 2023.
