The release date for HBO's upcoming series The Last Of Us, based on the hit video game, has been confirmed.

The adaptation will premiere on HBO on 15 January, news that will hopefully delight fans of the game hoping to see how the TV series matches up. Watch the trailer here:

Starring Pedro Pascal of The Mandalorian fame as Joel and Game of Thrones star Bella Ramsey as Ellie, it's the first TV series being developed by PlayStation Productions.

Developing the series from game to TV is Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin, who has worked with video game developer Naughty Dog to bring The Last Of Us to the small screen.

The first game was a massive hit with PlayStation gamers, releasing to huge critical acclaim and massive sales, although the sequel was tinged with a smidge more of a mixed reception.

Praised for a focus on story and incredibly engaging characters, The Last Of Us seems like a natural choice to be adapted from game to TV.

The series will follow a similar path to the game, taking the audience with post-apocalyptic survivor Joel as he makes his way through the US after it was brought low by a terrible disease.

Along his travels he encounters Ellie, a young girl in need of protection in the aftermath of a fallen society.

Fans were sent absolutely wild when the trailer dropped a couple of months ago, and with the series itself releasing on 15 January, it won't really be that long of a wait until we finally get to see how they did with the series.

The Last Of Us sees Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) trying to survive after a terrible disease struck the US.

Filming for the series kicked off last year and took about a year to complete, so here's hoping during that time they've managed to make something which captures the spirit of the game.

The series will cover the events of the first game, but as with pretty much any adaptation there will be some changes.

Mazin said anything that was changed in translation was 'designed to fill things out and expand' instead of attempting to 'undo' the source material.

He said they were aiming to 'enhance' the experience players of The Last Of Us had with the game by fleshing a few things out further on the show.

We're just hoping they managed to find a way to include the giraffe scene in the TV show.

The Last of Us is coming exclusively to HBO, Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW on 15 January, 2023.
