Actress Jena Malone has claimed that she was sexually assaulted by someone who she worked with while filming the hit Hunger Games series.

The star, now 38, took to Instagram to make the revelation yesterday (1 March), opening up about her experience when working on the movies.

Malone made the revelation alongside an image of her from 2014.

In the caption of the post, she explained that the image was taken in the French countryside after filming had wrapped on The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2.

She wrote: "We were shooting in a beautiful estate in the countryside of France and I asked the driver to let me out in this field so I could cry and capture this moment.

"Even tho this time in Paris was extremely hard for me, was going thru a bad break up and also was sexually assaulted by someone I had worked with, I was so full of gratitude for this project, the people I became close with and this amazing part I got to play [sic]."

She said that while she is grateful for the opportunities that the franchise gave her, the trauma she endured while filming has left her with a 'swirling mix of emotions im only now just learning to sort thru [sic].'

"I wish it wasn't tied to such a traumatic event for me but that is the real wildness of life I guess. How to hold the chaos with the beauty [sic]," Malone said.

But while the actress said she is only now processing the trauma, she said that she has forgiven the unnamed person who assaulted her.

Malone added that has been able to make 'peace' with them and 'peace with myself', but because of what happened she finds it difficult to discuss her time on the films.

But she is now 'ready to move thru it and reclaim the joy and accomplishment I felt'.

She also used the poignant post as an opportunity to extend her solidarity to other victims of sexual assault.

"Lots of love to you survivors out there," Malone wrote. "The process is so slow and non linear. I want to say im here for anyone who needs to talk or vent or open uncommunicated spaces within themselves. Please dm me if you need a safe space to be heard [sic]."

Malone is trying to reclaim the accomplishment of being in the films.

Malone played Johanna Mason in the franchise, the 71st victor of the Hunger Games.

She first played the role in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire before reprising it in the two-part final instalment - Mockingjay - Part 1 and Mockingjay - Part 2.
