People are complaining that they still aren’t sure what Avatar The Way of Water is about, even after watching the new trailer when it dropped earlier today.

The long-awaited sequel, which is due to his screens next month in December, is set more than a decade after the events of the first film, with an official synopsis offering: “Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.”

It’s arguably not an awful lot to go on plot-wise, meaning many people were looking to the new trailer for some answers.

Indeed, the new trailer proves that we have some stunning sequences in store, from incredible underwater scenes and impressive sea monsters through to fiery destruction throughout the world of Pandora.

But some viewers have pointed out that, while ‘visually dope’, the trailer doesn’t actually explain much about what we can expect narratively.

One person tweeted: “The CGI looks good, but this looks more like a tech demo or elaborate advertisement for a skin care product than a fleshed-out story. It would be nice if it's deeper than just Pacahantus in space like the last Avatar.”

The sequel is set more then a decade after the events of the first film.

Someone else agreed: “Visually dope but I don’t truly understand what the movie is even about.”

However, some were just grateful that the trailer didn’t give away the entire narrative by condensing the story into a short teaser.

“Idk about you but I’m glad they didn’t just summarize the whole movie in under 2 minutes… it takes all the magic out of going to see the movie,” someone wrote.

Another added: “It's intriguing but doesn't reveal much about the story, which is exactly what a trailer/teaser is supposed to be.”

There's no denying that the new film looks absolutely stunning.

Others, meanwhile, were just left feeling excited, with one commenting: “This looks so good! Can't wait!”

Directed by James Cameron, the forthcoming movie stars the likes of Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang and Kate Winslet.

Saldaña, who plays Neytiri, recently admitted it took her just 20 minutes into watching the sequel before she was in tears, meaning some of you should be prepared for waterworks.

The film drops next month.

Speaking to journalist Kevin McCarthy earlier this year, she explained how she was shown the footage back in 2021.

"I can get choked up just talking about it because I was able to see just 20 minutes of the second installment right before the year ended, last year,” she said.

"And I was speechless, I was moved to tears."

Avatar: The Way of Water is set to premiere in cinemas on 16 December.
