A woman has exposed a new 'penny dating method' that has left a lot of people very distributed.

Over the years, there have been many different dating trends discussed online, especially with the rise of TikTok.

Now, a rather toxic dating method has been spoken about on the popular video-sharing platform, and it involves treating an investment into a relationship like depositing your hard earned cash into a piggy bank.

Essentially, the 'penny dating method' involves putting 100 percent into a relationship at the start, before deliberately dropping off your effort and investment over time.

While it is common for more effort to be made at the start of a new romance compared to three years in, the reason for putting less investment in with this dating method is quite cruel.

The level of effort is dropped until the partner feels lucky enough to get the bare minimum.

The dating method has recently gone mainstream thanks to a viral video from the popular TikToker Erika Tham, who explained the tactic seemingly used by many.

Tham began the video explaining how she was recently talking to a male friend about 'love bombing'.

Many, of course, will know this as showing a partner a lot of affection at the start of a relationship - which is not uncommon, is it?

Well, this is when Tham discovered something quite shocking as the male friend explained that some men apparently use the tactic known as 'penny dating' where they treat women like a 'piggy bank'.

"To get her interested obviously at first you have to be feeding her hundred dollar bills," the male friend told the TikToker.

"Now here’s where it gets sick."

Basically, the method involves the person tinkering with how much effort they put in, sometimes even increasing it before decreasing again to appease their partner.

"The next thing you do is bring it back up to 95. Instead of feeling like they’ve lost 5, suddenly she feels like she’s gained 5," the friend apparently said.

Erika Tham explained the dating trend.

"Basically you just keep repeating this cycle and weaning her off your effort until you get to the point where you’re giving her pennies and suddenly, she’s excited to receive a nickel," Tham added.

Many were left horrified by the apparent tactic, as thousands flocked to the comments section to share their thoughts.

"Penny method is CRAZY," one person penned.

A second added: "You can't convince me this isn't psychological torture."

While a third wrote: "MY JAW DROPPED wha-."

Someone else commented: "That's sooo evil."

And a final user penned: "Never leaving my house again."
