Two parents on TikTok have sparked a debate online after insisting their 19-year-old daughter needs to pay rent since she decided not to go to college.

One of the benefits of living with your parents for many is being shielded from the costs of living. However, a Texas couple have said nonsense to that and asked TikTok users to give their opinions on their style of parenting.

Erika and Cody Archie from Gatesville have nearly a million followers on TikTok. Speaking to their followers, Erika asked in a video: “Can you all tell us do you make your graduated high school student pay rent in your house if they don’t go to college yet, tell us what you think?"

Cody added: “What are your thoughts on that? My thought is and our thought together is since she has graduated a couple weeks ago, I told her and I have been telling [our daughter Kylee Deason] for the last couple of months, June 1st your rent is due if you are going to continue to live here.”

Erika then began laughing as she said that she believed it was a little bit harsh and wanted her daughter to have a little leeway.

Cody explained that she would have to pay $200 for rent or $300 if she wanted to have access to the food in the home.

“200 bucks a month is plenty cheap to live like a grub in your parents' house,” the father added.

Social media users were quick to give their own takes on the couple’s parenting tactic.

“A definite no for me. I know it’s rare, but I will forever help my kids, no matter the age,” one user commented.

“naa because I didn’t get to enjoy a childhood or a normal family home life so she can stay until shes 40 for all I care,” another commented.

“I’m 20 living with my parents and live free, doesn’t make sense to me, want them to leave but taking money that would help them do so,” another confused user commented.

“no, no, no, they are your children, my gosh that’s awful,” added another TikTok users.

Other people praised the couple and insisted this was a good life lesson, highlighting their parents did the same thing to them.

“My parents gave me about 6 months before charging rent. It helped me learn to manage my money better. They gave it back to me when I moved out,” one person commented.

“Our rule is if you are in full time education our home is free but otherwise rent happens,” another added.

What do you think? Did your parents make you pay rent before or after college?
