Selena Gomez opens up on ‘crying her eyes out’ over hate after lupus diagnosis

Selena may put on a strong front, but everyone has their limits.

Selena Gomez has admitted that comments made about her body after her lupus diagnosis left her 'crying her eyes out'.

The singer and former Disney Channel star was diagnosed with lupus back in 2014.

While she didn't exactly understand what it meant at the time, she says she knew that her body was 'fighting itself on the inside'.

In the latest episode of Dear... on Apple TV+, Selena reflected on the life-changing diagnosis and how it has affected her in the years since.

When doctors first told her the news, Selena says it was 'surreal', since she 'felt completely fine'.

"So hearing from a doctor that, ‘Oh, you could’ve had a stroke onstage, you could’ve died,’ it was a lot," she shared.

The Only Murders In The Building star was prescribed medications for lupus, which naturally caused her weight to fluctuate.

Unfortunately, trolls saw this as an opportunity to attack her online.

"It was like they couldn’t wait to find a thing to bring me down,” Selena shared.

"I lied. I would go online and post a picture of myself and I would say, ‘It doesn’t matter. I’m not accepting what you’re saying,’ all the while being in the room posting that crying my eyes out, ’cause nobody deserves to hear those things.”

In the last few months alone, Selena has repeatedly had to confront cruel trolls who decided to mock her weight online.

When photos of Selena on holiday in Mexico for New Year's were shared online, most of the comments were pretty positive, but there were a lot of gross ones too.

When one fan jumped to Selena's defence on TikTok, telling haters to 'get a f**king life', Selena took to the comments and assured her: "I love you girl but I got it. I love my body."

Then, after people saw Selena rock up to the 2023 Golden Globes and felt the desire to criticise her body, she hit back.

"I’m a little bit big right now because I enjoyed myself during the holidays," she said during a Facebook Live with her sister Gracie Elliott Teefey.

The pair burst out laughing, with Gomez adding: "But we don’t care."

Elsewhere in her episode of Dear..., Selena spoke about the kidney transplant she got from her friend Francia Raisa in 2017.

"I will never, ever, ever be more in debt to a person than Francia,” she said.

"The idea of someone not even second-guessing to be a donor was unbelievably overwhelming...

"I think it had to happen the way that it did. In order for me to get to where I am, I was meant to go through it to do something for others."
