Days after giving a scathing speech about the president and Robert De Niro has addressed the claims that he has 'Trump Derangement Syndrome'.

On March 28, The Irishman star De Niro spoke at a No Kings protest in New York – the city he was born and raised in.

Last weekend's protests marked the third iteration of No Kings rallies, the first being in June 2025.

It's thought that some eight million people attended the most recent protests that were held across the US. According to CNN, there were more than 3,000 different protests that took place.

Speaking at one in New York, 82-year-old De Niro didn't hold back while sharing his thoughts on the president.

"When the crowds are chanting ‘no Kings’ what I am really hearing, as we all know, is ‘no Trump’," he said.

"There have been other presidents that have tested the constitutional limits of their power but none have been such an existential threat to our freedoms and security, none except Trump.

"He must be stopped and he must be stopped now."

His remarks were just the latest public criticisms he's made about Trump, having long rebuked the POTUS and his policies since be began his second term in office.

Trump responded to the two-time Oscar winning actor's latest comments and branded him 'Trump Deranged Robert De Niro', referring to the made-up condition 'Trump Derangement Syndrome'.

What the actor has said in response

De Niro has been asked directly about having the 'syndrome' and described it as 'nonsense'.

"People don't like him for a reason," the acting legend told Fox News. "All the terrible things he's done. If he did nice things, then he could have — he had the chance — he became president — to do nice things, not hateful, retribution, not just outright mean things."

"If he did nice things, people would love him," De Niro added. "But he's got a problem. He's damaged."

Last year, lawmakers tried to get the so-called syndrome classified as a mental health disorder. At the time of writing, it still isn't recognized as an actual disorder and the Therapy Group of DC have said it's just 'political slang'.

"It is not a diagnosis listed in the DSM-5 or any other clinical manual," it explains on its website. "Supporters of President Donald Trump coined it as a rhetorical jab. The implication being that critics are so blinded by dislike that they can’t perceive reality. The label discredits rather than describes, and its very existence shows how political language can blur the line between clinical insight and partisan insult."
