Ne-Yo has revealed the 'rules' his girlfriends need to follow but why he also 'doesn't do ownership' within his polyamorous relationships.

Gone are the days where everyone gets coupled up and accepts that as the societal norm, with many now opting for a different relationship status.

Whether choosing to remain single, ending up in a foursome, open relationship or polyamorous relationship, people are reviewing what makes them most happy and comfortable and how they can live their best life.

'So Sick' of the average coupling, musician Ne-Yo - real name Shaffer Chimere Smith - is polyamorous and has opened up about having four girlfriends.

During an appearance on The Angie Martinez Show, the 45-year-old revealed 'the question [he] gets asked the most' is whether or not his four girlfriends are 'allowed to date outside' of just him.

And well, he had a pretty strong answer for that.

The musician explained it's the question he receives 'all the damn time' and so he's just going to address it now, revealing his girlfriends are 'not' allowed to date outside of him - but it may not be for the reason you might think.

He continued: "Here's the thing, when I got with these women, I did not ask for their exclusivity, I did not demand their exclusivity, they offered it.

"They came to me and said, 'I want to be exclusive to you and just you.' I said, 'You understand that your exclusivity to me does not mean my exclusivity to you, you understand this?' 'Yes.' 'You're okay with this?' 'Yes.'

"'Okay cool, since you are offering your exclusivity and I'm taking it, now there's rules that I need you to follow."

However, the musician notes 'at the same time' he 'doesn't do ownership'.

He reflected he'd 'be a fool' if he thought he was 'the only person who anybody will ever be attracted to, anybody will ever want to see' and so if the situation comes up where one of his girlfriends is interested in someone else, 'nothing is above a conversation'.

"However, in that, I'm the head of this household, what I say goes, so if I say 'no' it's a no. And you just got to let that be a no or the door is over there," he added.

Ne-Yo later clarified he's technically allowed to date and have sexual relations with people outside of his four girlfriends but he's 'good' without doing that, at least for the moment that is.

"There is no random hook-ups, everything is discussed," he said.

But what is the definition of polyamory?

Well, polyamory 'is the philosophy and practice of loving multiple people at the same time in an open, honest way. It emphasizes choice regarding the number of partners one can choose instead of adhering to social norms such as monogamy,' VeryWellMind explains.

It continues: "Unlike open relationships, polyamory is characterized by emotional as well as sexual or romantic intimacy among partners. In contrast to infidelity, adultery, and extramarital sex, polyamory is disclosed and agreed to by everyone involved."

So, whatever floats your boat guys, as long as there's always honesty and consent involved, eh?
