Matthew Perry fans flock to NYC Friends apartment to pay tribute

Fans of the late Matthew Perry took to the NYC Friends apartment to pay their respects to the actor.

Following the news that Friends actor Matthew Perry had died, fans have taken to an iconic location in New York City to pay tribute.

Perry, who played the quick-witted Chandler Bing in the 90s classic, died over the weekend at the age of 54.

Perry was reportedly found at his home in the hot tub by the Los Angeles Police Department on Saturday (October 28). Police have said that currently they have found no signs of foul play.

An official cause of death is yet to be released and investigations are ongoing.

As news of his passing began to spread, fans of the show began taking to social media to emphasize just how important the sitcom was to them and praise Perry's candor about his struggles with addiction.

On Sunday, some fans took these tributes off the internet and into the streets.

Many well-wishers flocked to Manhattan’s West Village to the apartment building at 90 Bedford Street.

While much of the Friends show was shot in a Hollywood soundstage, exterior shots were of this six-story building. Perry fans left roses, candles and even notes as tribute to the late actor.

“The one where we all lost a friend,” one note at the location read.

Another read: “We will never understand what Chandler’s job was, but we will know how much joy being in his company brought us."

"We are so sorry no one was there for you. You are so loved and will be missed for generations. Thank you for being our friend,” a third message read.

Some fans who were outside of the apartment spoke to local media about the news of Perry’s death.

“He’s a comedy hero of mine. It’s quite surreal really to be able to come and pay our respects,” British father Steve Rogers told the New York Post.

News of Perry's death broke while he and his family were on a four-day vacation in New York.

"All of them, especially Matthew, helped me through the darkest time in my life,” Jeniffer Alvez told the publication while wearing a shirt featuring Perry from a scene of the show.

"They were such a part of my life. I didn’t know I would feel this way.

"I’m not sure how I’m going to feel when I watch Friends again after this. I hope he rests in peace."

Despite his character's laid-back attitude in the show, Perry had struggled with both alcohol and drug addiction throughout his life, with multiple stints in rehab.

The actor was very candid about his difficulties dealing with his addictions and went into more depth in his memoir Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, which was released last year.
