Canadian singer Grimes has condemned trolls on social media who have taken to mocking Selena Gomez following a viral image of her that has begun circulating.
People talking about celebrities and their appearance isn’t anything new, it has long been a common point of conversation, but not much, if any of it, is all that justified.
Grimes, 37, recently took to X to defend Gomez, who has been on the receiving end of a slew of unnecessary attacks over her appearance.
Last week, the 33-year-old released the music video for her song 'In the Dark' on YouTube and what should have been a brilliant moment for the artist quickly spiralled.
A freeze frame of Gomez from the video quickly started circulating on social media, with some critics bizarrely questioning whether she has had 'botched plastic surgery'.
Grimes defended Selena Gomez against the cruel comments (X/Grimes) In her post, Grimes dismissed the whole conversation and argued it was not good for Gomez's, or anyone else's, mental health.
On October 26, she wrote: “I've been in the internet for like 48 hours and despite minor benefits I might have to leave. Watched this Selena Gomez video, besides a few weird derp shots that ppl were able to clip and super misrepresent how she looks she looks extremely beautiful, is prob one of the most beautiful girls.
“Imagine what it wud feel like if people talked about you this way. Try to imagine the mental fortitude she presumably has. How do we not utterly morally castigate someone who has a post like this blows up and chooses to keep the clout at the expense of everybodies mental health. How do u think little girls feel reading stuff like this about another woman?”
Grimes also argued that there are not many women over the age of 30 celebrated in entertainment and continued to dismiss the ‘high-school level of bullying’ directed at celebrities.
Selena Gomez has been dealing with harsh comments since she debuted a new music video (Selena Gomez/YouTube) She added: “Accounts shud be suspended for body shaming en masse. This is disturbing - in part because it's not even true if u actually watch this video.
“Im not rly in the biz of even knowing what celebrities do, I have no context here, but this place is unhealthy as f**k and this being socially acceptable behavior is culture death - not just for the Selena or the writer but everyone who sees this and engages with this level of dehumanization.”
Other social media users praised the singer for speaking out and agreed with her statement.
One wrote: “Im glad you're saying something about this, its extremely weird and disturbing people feel the need to act this way towards other human beings.”
Another added: “Thank you for this, I’m glad someone with a bigger voice is speaking about how wrong this all is.”
Gomez has not publicly addressed the comments.
UNILAD has contacted Gomez’s representatives for comment.
