People are flooding to social media to commemorate DJ Casper, the legend behind the infamous 'Cha Cha Slide', who has sadly died.

It's the song we all waited in anticipation for at our school disco, and it's still religiously played at every house party, birthday, wedding - you name it - the 'Cha Cha Slide' remains every 90s and 00s babies jam.

As the song continues to live on, it will now also carry the memory of its creator DJ Casper - real name Willie Perry Jr - with it.

The Chicago icon passed away on Monday, 7 August at the age of 58 years old, with his death being confirmed by his wife.

'Cha Cha Slide' was released in August, 2000 and went on to reach position 83 in the Billboard Hot 100, remaining on the chart for five weeks.

In March, 2004 it topped the UK Singles Chart and it became a staple song played at discos, weddings and birthday parties alike - the song and DJ Casper himself even appearing in hit series Orange Is The New Black.

Easy to dance along to, with simple moves and lyrics, the song is sure to remain a hit with all generations.

In an interview in May earlier this year, DJ Casper explained he first did the 'Cha Cha Slide' as an aerobics exercise for his nephew.

"From there it just took off," he previously told ABC7. "[...] I have one of the biggest songs that's played in all the stadiums; hockey, basketball, football, baseball.

"They played it at the Olympics. It was just something that everybody could do."

In 2016, the star was diagnosed with two forms of cancer - kidney and liver.

The musician noted: "If you know me, I'm not going to stop. I'm going to continue until I can't go."

People are flocking to social media to commemorate the musician and offer their condolences to his family and friends.

One Twitter user wrote: "So many good memories doing the cha cha slide. RIP DJ Casper."

"His legacy will live on at every bar mitzvah, quinceanera and wedding. RIP," a second added.

A third commented: "Losing DJ Casper and Dj Deeon back to back has me in my feelings. We need to do more to document and celebrate Chicago cultural legends while they are here."

And a final resolved: "RIP DJ Casper, the creator of The Cha Cha Slide. That man had a hand in making many family reunions, BBQs, dances, weddings, sporting events & other events fun with his song.

"I was literally just singing it yesterday with my brother playing around. He left a legacy."

So, everybody clap your hands for the legend who is DJ Casper.
