Jenna Ortega has spoken out about a disturbing experience that led to her leaving Twitter, now known as X.

The Wednesday actor, 21, has spoken about why she decided to close her Twitter account when she was 14, adding that she 'hates' artificial intelligence and the way it's being used online.

With AI constantly becoming more advanced and sophisticated, it can be pretty daunting to see how the technology is being used.

While AI undoubtedly has plenty of incredible uses, it's also being used irresponsibly, something which Ortega opened up about.

In fact, the actor first experienced the dangerous side of the technology when she was just a child, after she had a terrifying experience online.

Speaking to The New York Times, she said: “I hate A.I.

“I mean, here’s the thing: A.I. could be used for incredible things. I think I saw something the other day where they were saying that artificial intelligence was able to detect breast cancer four years before it progressed. That’s beautiful. Let’s keep it to that."

Discussing the dark side of AI, Ortega added: “Did I like being 14 and making a Twitter account because I was supposed to and seeing dirty edited content of me as a child? No. It’s terrifying. It’s corrupt. It’s wrong."

When the interviewer clarified that Ortega was referring to seeing pornographic AI-generated images of herself as a child, she added: “Yes, of course."

Discussing social media further, Ortega explained that the first DM she ever opened contained a photo 'of a man's genitals', explaining that moment was 'the beginning of what was to come'.

Following her experience, Ortega said she shut down her accounts, adding that it was 'disgusting'.

“It made me feel uncomfortable. Anyway, that’s why I deleted [Twitter], because I couldn’t say anything without seeing something like that. So one day I just woke up, and I thought, Oh, I don’t need this anymore. So I dropped it.”

Ortega recently opened up about some of the controversy surrounding the movie she filmed with Martin Freeman, Miller's Girl.

Ortega starred opposite Freeman in the erotic thriller earlier this year, in which an illicit affair takes place between Ortega’s character, an 18-year-old, and her creative writing teacher, played by British actor Freeman.

The film features x-rated sex scenes between the pair, acting out a steamy story written by Ortega’s character.

Social media users were understandably taken aback at the scenes.

Ortega opened up on the movie in a new interview with Vanity Fair, where she said: “It’s not supposed to be a comfortable movie. It’s supposed to be awful at times.

“Art isn’t always meant to be pleasant or happy, and everyone skips off into the sunset at the end. We all have f**ked-up experiences at one point or another.”
